Thermal Transfer – These printers use a fixed thermal printhead, pressing onto a paper or plastic label, over a driven rubber roller called a platen. Between the printhead and the label is sandwiched a very thin thermal transfer ribbon coated with wax, wax-resin or pure resin ink. As the label and ribbon are driven beneath the printhead, tiny pixels across the width of the printhead are heated to melt the ink off the ribbon and onto the label, creating the desired images and text. |

Direct thermal Running off the same concept as thermal transfer printers, direct thermal printers produce a desired image by selectively heating coated thermochromic paper when the label passes over the printhead.
The coating turns black in the areas where it is heated producing an image. |
